Fonograf był poprzednikiem gramofonu wynalezionym przez Thomasa Edisona w 1877 roku. Dźwięk zapisywany był przy pomocy diamentowej igły na cylindrze i analogiczni odtwarzany.
Fonografy wyparło wynalezienie płyty gramofonowej (szelakowej) oraz możliwość jej nagrywania metodą elektryczną.
Ostatnie urządzenie do odtwarzania wałków wyprodukowano w 1929 roku.
Wałek jest bardzo delikatny.
